The Philippines makes me go loco for Goana! This is a black throat monitor native to Africa, not Asia btw but how amazing is it we got his tongue in this shot!? Monitors are one of the few lizard species with a forked tongue, like snakes. These reptiles use this to taste the air (=chemoreception) and there's a lot of tongue flickering when food is near…And forked to gain a sense of direction…stereochemoreception?If one of the "prongs" senses a stronger stimulus the lizard or snake will go in that direction. #lawdhavemercy as if 1 Mexican beaded lizard wasn't enough for me to have a #lizardconniption ??? Did you know these lizards are closely related to Gila Monsters (soft "G" on the Gila btw)? And they're the only venomous lizards in the world (still debated about Komodo dragons but that's another story…) and their venom glands are along their LOWER jaw!!?? Most venomous reptiles house venom glands behind their eyes on their face, not their jaws. How perty is this diamondback terrapin!? Such neat lil chelonians (chelonian=turtles and tortoises). Did you know most turtles are semi-aquatic or aquatic and spend most of their lives in/near water? And tortoises on the other hand are terrestrial and typically live on land in dry climates. #babies It doesn't really matter what animal species…to me, any baby is cute ??Even the slithering, venomous ones ?The Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes just had their babies a few weeks ago so be on the lookout if you live in Southern California. #didyouknow rattlesnakes give live birth? They're ovoviviparous which basically means they produce eggs but the babies "hatch" internally before leaving mom. Most other reptiles lay eggs and the babies break out of a shell like baby birds.
